Gym Bag Essentials

Over the past few years, I’ve learned how to live on the go. In college, I commuted to school which meant I usually left my house early in the morning, went to class, worked out, went to more classes, and then had other activities. Some days I would leave the house at 7AM and not get back til after 10PM. (I don’t miss this… at all.)

If commuting taught me anything.. it taught me how to be prepared! I didn’t have the luxury of running back to my dorm room if I forgot a paper, and since I refused to eat the cafe food – there weren’t many options if I didn’t bring a snack or meal. I had to have all my school supplies, clothes, and food in my car. (Which typically resulted in my car looking like I was almost living out of it by Friday afternoon) Even though I’m no longer commuting to school – I still have long days. 5 days out of the week I wake up and get to the gym by 530, work by 830, and arrive home around 7.

My gym bag is my life saver! Since I don’t go home after my workout, my gym bag has to have everything I need in to for the gym, getting ready for work, and anything else I might need! Last week  I wrote about my beach bag essentials.. so today I’m going to share my gym bag essentials :)

Sneakers seem like a no brainer.. but you’d be surprised. Normally I wear my sneakers to the gym but in the winter I will wear boots to keep my shoes from getting snowy/muddy. I’ve forgotten my shoes quite a few times.. so now I keep an old pair in my car just in case. I just bought a pair of Nike Free’s and I’m loving them for lifting.

Next to shoes – snacks are probably the most important thing to keep in your gym bag! Obviously you can’t keep perishable things in your gym bag – so protein bars are usually my go-to. Lately I’ve been loving B-Up Bars! These bars are high in protein & fiber, low in sodium, sugar, and carbs and they have no sucralose!

We’re all human and occasionally hit the snooze button too many times. Whenever I’m in a time crunch for breakfast – I love to have a Cinnamon Roll B-Up Bar. The flavor is so on point it actually makes me feel like I’m eating a cinnamon roll.. especially if you microwave it until it gets warm and soft.

Post workout I like to refuel with some source of protein. Sometimes I just eat a plain piece of chicken breast or drink a protein shake.. but with the hot weather I just can’t stomach eating chicken breast at 7AM or drinking a heavy protein shake. Peanut Butter B-Up Bars have been my latest addiction. The bar is so soft, and loaded with chunks of peanut butter chips. They’re so delicious that I usually want to eat two.. it’s practically like eating a Peanut Butter Cookie. Protein + great taste = Perfect gym time snack! Check out those chunks.. yum!

Staying hydrated at the gym is SO important. I drink 20 oz of water in the morning when I wake up before the gym. Then I fill up my BlenderBottle throughout my workout/rest of my day. I like these bottles because they never leak and are practically indestructible.

I don’t like to leave my laptop, purse, or other belongings in my car while I’m at the gym. I always bring a lock for my locker. It’s better to be safe than sorry and know that your belongings aren’t going to be meddled with!

I’ve been working on my pull-ups almost every day at the gym. Using resistance bands have helped me immensely with assisted pullups. The assisted pull up machine that is at most gyms really isn’t the most effective way to work on pullups. Due to the fact that your knees are bent, you lose your ability to fully activate your core. When you use resistance bands your body is set into a position where you can use your entire core and perform the exercise effectively. (You can watch this video for more information on this)

I can’t workout without an armband or headphones. My phone always gets in the way of everything so I bought this super cheap armband a few months back from Amazon and it has held up surprisingly well! I usually use the headphones that came with my iPhone, but I have an extra pair of Skullcandy headphones in my gym bag in case I forget mine.

What’s the one thing you can’t live without in your gym bag??
